Operation Lysistrata:
A Film Event
Riverspace Arts
Nyack, NY
Back in the winter of 2003, our theatrical community came together in an unprecedented way to protest the impending attack on Iraq. Acknowledging THAW as their inspiration, two actresses had the idea to perform simultaneous readings of the ancient Greek anti-war play, Lysistrata, as a way to protest against the preemptive strike on Iraq. The themes of male dominance, proclivity toward war and ridicule of dissent in the 2,400 year-old play are such uncannily relevant themes in today’s climate that word of the event resonated around the world to generate over 1,000 readings and performances on March 3, 2003, in all fifty states and 59 countries worldwide to become the largest single theatrical act of dissent in history.
A new film, "Operation Lysistrata", is the story of how two women transformed their individual aspirations for peace into a movement which allowed the global community to share in their vision. The documentary touches on subjects of grassroots activism, conflict resolution, community building and the role of art in a functioning democracy-how these elements combine to empower and engage communities around the world to make a non-violent statement for peace.
Operation Lysistrata chronicles this unique historic happening with humor, intelligence and inspiration. Featuring interviews with F. Murray Abraham, Kathleen Chalfant, Howard Zinn, Viggo Mortensen, Judith Malina, Ellen McLaughlin and many other THAW friends and allies.
Riverspace Arts in located in Nyack at 119 Main Street, the center of downtown Nyack.
Take the train to Tarrytown connecting with the Tappan Zee Express bus to Nyack or take a bus directly from the Port Authority on 42nd Street or at the George Washington Bridge.

ABOUT AL-ROWWAD CULTURAL & THEATRE CENTER
Al-Rowwad Cultural and Theatre Center is dedicated to the training of children in Aida Camp-Bethlehem to help them overcome the repercussions of military occupation. As an independent, non-governmental organization, the center also offers educational and cultural programs which promote human rights.
In addition to their work in Palestine, Al Rowwad has toured theatres in Europe and North America. These tours bring to the confined children the invaluable experience of traveling to foreign lands, while educating international audiences about the realities of life in the occupied territories.
"Theater is a powerful tool of expression. It allows the children to manage and release all the anger, frustration, and pressure they live under, and to deliver their message in a peaceful, nonviolent, and civilized way. It also shows them how educating themselves in different fields is vital, and that they can't build their country by fighting in the streets."
Abdelfattah Abu-Srour,
Director of Al-Rowwad and the first Palestinian recipient of an Ashoka Fellowship (2006-2009) acknowledging “system changing solutions for the world’s most urgent problems.”
