American soldiers, an Iraqi translator, and a tiger roam the doomed streets of Baghdad in this darkly, comedic drama set against the backdrop of the Iraq War.  Inspired by an Associated Press article about a bizarre interaction at the Baghdad Zoo, playwright Rajiv Joseph explains: "The sadness and absurdity of that event led me to a different way of thinking about the war in Iraq.  There’s a point where the media and government’s articulation of the war stops being particularly helpful."

As Research Assistant to Nicholas Kristof, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist from The New York Times, playwright Winter Miller is immersed in the issues surrounding the ongoing genocide in Darfur, Sudan. In Darfur is the provocative account of three intertwined lives at a camp for Internally Displaced Persons in Darfur. The story follows an aid-worker's mission to save and protect lives, a journalist's pursuit to deliver a Page One story and a Darfuri woman's quest for safety. It is a searing story of urgency and international significance.

This development production of In Darfur, will be more than a reading but not yet a full production. This important step in the creative process will allow the playwright to work collaboratively with a director, actors and design team and learn from an audience's presence and response. This play also affords us the opportunity to respond quickly and urgently to the humanitarian crisis in Darfur and to do our part to draw public attention to the situation in Darfur.

The Public Theater will be presenting Conversations on Darfur: a series of post-show discussions with leading activists, thinkers and journalists on the issues of Darfur. They are also partnering with Save Darfur and Genocide Intervention Network for education and awareness programs in the lobby.
